Description

Brady Middle School in the Orange City School District will further showcase the innovative and engaging learning opportunities it provides students when it welcomes the mobile Fab Lab to the school campus. Brady students in grades 6-8 and their younger peers in second grade will delve into various interactive projects in this fabrication laboratory (Fab Lab) thanks to a donation from Ms. Jan Morrison, a grandmother of an Orange student and the Founder, President and CEO of Teaching Institute Excellence in STEM (TIES). Special thank you to the Orange Elementary and Middle PTA who will be purchasing the Fab Lab materials. Residents will have an opportunity to experience the Fab Lab during Community Night on February 25, 2016 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Community members will have an opportunity to reserve times (through these free EventBrite tickets) to do a small project (30 minutes) on one of the following machines. To see available time slots for each machine, please click Register. You may reserve up to 2 spots for each session. You may also reserve spots for different machines during different time slots.

  • MakerBot 3D Printer - computers will be available for using a 3D CAD (computer-aided design) program and 3D Printer Filament will be provided for small projects.

  • Epilog Laser Cutter/Engraver - computers will be available for using a graphic creation program and acrylic, cardstock and cardboard will be available for cutting/engraving.

  • ShopBot CNC Router - computers will be available for using a graphic creation program and foam will be available for cutting/engraving. Some wood may also be available if it's not all used by students during the week.

  • Vinyl Cutter - computers will be available for using a graphic creation program and adhesive vinyl will be available for small projects.

  • Circuit Station with Soldering Irons - copper tape, soldering irons & LED bulbs will be available for creating small circuits that light up LEDs.

The Fab Lab is aligned with Orange Schools’ effort to continue providing students with engaging STEM opportunities while working toward a cohesive K-12 STEM educational plan that meets the Board of Education strategy to strengthen and expand district science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics offerings.

This experience has been generously supported by staff at TIES, MC2STEM High School and Lorain County Community College’s Fab Lab. Morrison believes in the power of STEM education for the students and the community. It is this core belief that inspired her to make such a generous donation. TIES is headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio and provides STEM education for youngsters through the USA and globally.

FAQs

Where will the event take place?

The event will be inside of Brady Middle School. Currently the plan is to have all stations and machines in the "Old Gym," though electrical needs and space requirements may change that. If you enter the building through the main doors there will be signs or greeters there to direct you.

Will I get to keep what I made?

Yes, at most stations, you will be able to keep what you made. There are some stations, such as the circuit station, where that won't be possible because we need the materials (such as LEDs) that are used for other people.

Can I get multiple tickets?

While you can only reserve 1 half-hour spot for each station, you ARE welcome to reserve spots at other stations at other times.

Do I have to make something? Can I just come to OBSERVE and VIEW everything?

You're welcome to just come observe and check everything out. There are "Observer" tickets available as well. You'll probably be jealous of the people doing projects though!

Can I work on a big project for more than a half-hour?

Unfortunatley, no. To make sure that many people have a chance to participate, each person is limited to 30 minutes at each station. However, Fab Labs at locations such as the CSU branch of the MC2STEM High School or at Lorain County Community College do have Open Fab Lab times, typically on Saturdays, when you can work on bigger projects.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

While we will have the lists on hand just in case, it would be more convenient for us if you did. You are also welcome to show us the ticket or confirmation email on your mobile device. If you happen to forget your ticket, you will still be able to participate, as long as your name appears on our list.

What is the refund policy?

If you change your mind, please notify us so that we can free that spot up for another person!

The name on the registration/ticket doesn't match the attendee. Is that okay?

Yes - as long as the ticket is transferred from one Orange Schools Community member to another, it's okay.
